Language Proficiency and Legal Writing

Why Attend

Legal language refers to the "language of legal science." Just as each science has its own terminology and definitions, so too does legal science. The term "law" refers to the set of legal rules that constitute the "legal system" that actually governs the lives of a group of people in a particular place and time. From an applied linguistic perspective, the term "legal language" generally encompasses various types of legal writing styles. Some divide legal language into three sub-languages: legislative language, judicial language, and legal language. Each of these three languages has its own distinguishing characteristics. Others distinguish between three main types of legal language, based on their functions in general and their structures in particular. These types are: legislative writing, judicial writing, and academic legal writing.
